An intriguing doubleheader featuring a pair of Houston-based fighters has likely found a home where selling tickets and harvesting backyard appeal shouldn’t be a problem.
Jermall Charlo is set to defend his junior middleweight title against former titleholder Austin Trout and Erislandy Lara has a rematch with Vanes Martirosyan in another junior middleweight title fight. Both matches are slated for May 21 and are likely headed to Houston on the Showtime network, a source told RingTV.com on Tuesday. Though the deal hasn’t been finalized, the source said it was “nearing completion.”
Both IBF titleholder Charlo (23-0, 18 knockouts) and WBA champion Lara (22-2-2, 13 KOs) train under the tutelage of the Houston-based trainer Ronnie Shields. While Charlo is TexasÔÇöbred, Lara is a Cuban transplant who now resides in Houston.
Martirosyan, who fought to a technical draw with Lara in 2012, announced the May date on social media on Tuesday. “May 21st I will be Champion of the world!” he wrote on his Twitter account. Boxingscene’s Jake Donovan was the first to report Houston as a location for the doubleheader.
RingTV.com reported nearly two weeks ago that Showtime was looking to package the Charlo-Trout bout with Deontay Wilder’s WBC heavyweight title defense against Alexander Povetkin in Moscow, Russia in a May 21 evening telecast. Now it may package three title fights instead of two.
