Felix Verdejo to headline UniMas card on April 16
It is official.
Undefeated lightweight Felix Verdejo will fight Daniel Evangelista on April 16, Top Rank Promotions made the official announcement Monday afternoon.
The 10-round bout will take place at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Verdejo’s hometown, and will air on UniMas.
The proposed fight between Verdejo and Evangelista was first mentioned in a story by RingTV’s Mitch Abramson. Top Rank matchmaker Brad Goodman confirmed the fight to this scribe on Monday.
It was at the same venue on Dec. 11 where Verdejo scored an impressive second round knockout win over Josenilson Dos Santos of Brazil.
In his last bout on Feb. 27, Verdejo (20-0, 14 KOs) won a one-sided 10 round decision over William Silva in New York City. Some in boxing believed Verdejo would turn in the same type of performance as he did against Dos Santos; however, he failed to repeat as impressively on an HBO broadcast.
The Evangelista bout seems like a tune-up as there is talk of Verdejo fighting Mexico’s Jose Felix Jr. on a Top Rank card in New York City on June 11, which coincides with the yearly Puerto Rican Day holiday and parade.
Evangelista (18-6-2, 14 KOs) fought to a six-round split decision draw against Marco Antonio Juarez in his last bout on March 5.
The fighter from Mexico City appeared on an UniMas broadcast on Aug. 1, losing a one-sided, eight-round decision to Casey Ramos.
In the co-feature of the “Solo Boxeo Tecate” broadcast, featherweight Christopher Diaz is scheduled to fight in a six-round bout.
