A most interested and invested party could be front and center Saturday night when pugilist specialist Andre Ward gloves up and looks to show inactivity hasn’t dulled his edges. As Ward does his thing against Cuban Sullivan Barrera on his home turf of Oakland and on HBO, the plan is for (possible? probable?) rival Sergey Kovalev to be watching, front row, munching popcorn and scouting out a future foe.
“That’s the plan,” said Kovalev promoter Kathy Duva.
And, might we learn plans for Kovalev’s next bout, versus TBD, maybe in Russia?
“I will if they are in place. With Russia, these things take time,” said the Main Events boss, who was featured with her badass ladies club on a “The Fight Game” feature last week.
And does she have any idea if Ward will be one and done, open to fighting Barrera and then next up grapple with the Kovalev test?
“I have no idea,” Duva said. “You have to ask Roc Nation.”
Team Ward and Roc have played it close to the vest on the exact route to Kovalev. Maybe SOG sees how he looks and feels versus Barrera, and decides from that point if he’ll forgo another rust-shedder. If that is so, you might see Kovalev clapping with pointed glee should Ward look A-plus grade while dispatching Barrera.
