David Lemieux’s comeback fight with James De La Rosa in his hometown of Montreal is off after Lemieux failed to make the contracted weight of 163 pounds at the weigh-in on Friday, Golden Boy matchmaker Robert Diaz told RingTV.com.

Lemieux tipped the scales at 165.6 pounds while De La Rosa (23-3, 13 knockouts) weighed 163 pounds for their catchweight match at the Olympia Theatre in Montreal, where Lemieux is from. Diaz noted the two camps were still trying to work out a possible resolution but at the moment the bout has been scrapped.

“Lemieux had some issues and at this point the fight is off,” said Diaz, speaking from Montreal. “You never know what can be done with some time left but at this moment it’s off.”

Lemieux, a former IBF middleweight titleholder, was hoping for a happy homecoming after he struggled against Gennady Golovkin last October at Madison Square Garden on HBO PPV in a middleweight unification match. Lemieux (34-3, 31 knockouts) was dropped in the fifth round and put up little resistance in getting stopped in the eighth despite his reputation as a big puncher. Now, it’s up to his handlers to figure out what’s next for him after Friday’s setback. “We just have to sit down and reschedule his fight and get him in the ring as soon as possible,” Diaz said.
