Several weeks after an intriguing matchup between Lucas Matthysse and Mauricio Herrera first came to light, Golden Boy Promotions is still finalizing the welterweight bout for the Canelo Alvarez-Amir Khan undercard on May 7 on HBO PPV, Golden Boy VP Eric Gomez said on Tuesday.

“It’s still in the works,” Gomez said following an Alvarez-Khan press conference at the Hard Rock Caf├® in Times Square. “It’s about a week away from getting done. There are still loose ends — details that are important that could break the fight. They’re both interested but once you go down and start talking about money and weight and this and that, you can lose the fight.”

Matthysse (37-4, 34 knockouts) was upset his last time out, suffering a 10th-round stoppage at the hands of Viktor Postol in October in which he sustained an injury to his eye. But the Argentine, now healthy, remains one of the most exciting boxers in the sport. The 35-year-old Herrera (22-5, 7 KOs) won a technical decision against Hank Lundy in July and lost a unanimous decision to Jose Benavidez and a majority decision to Danny Garcia, both in 2014.

Both are currently rated at junior welterweight by THE RING, Matthysse at No. 4 and Herrera at No. 7, but Gomez confirmed the fight would talk place at 147 pounds. He added that Matthysse has been having trouble making 140, while Herrera is able to go up or down in weight.

If heavyweight Luis Ortiz comes out of Saturday’s bout with Tony Thompson unscathed at the DC Armory, Ortiz remains a candidate to also appear on the May 7 undercard, Gomez said.
