Seanie wants Sergey

Just win, baby, they say, and worry about looking good next time.
Nah, Seanie Monaghan is thinking, that concept is out the window.
Saturday night, he’s looking to win in a certain fashion.
Impressively.
And that means stoppage.
The Long Beach, Long Island based light heavyweight wants to turn in a message sending performance.
The communication he wants to impart at the MSG Theater is this: 21-3 Janne Forsman, all due respect, is not on his level.
“I want the signature fight, the title fight, a fight with Juergen Braehmer, or Sergey Kovalev, one thousand percent, Mike,” he told me on Wednesday at a workout held at Mendez Gym in Manhattan, attended by the top boxers on the Top Rank show. “I gotta show the people, Monaghan’s a level is above these types. Put him in with a killer!”
The preeminent killer sort in the game today happens to share space with Seanie, at 175. Kovalev is seen as majestically sadistic, a conscienceless technician in an enlightened but degraded age. There are more businessmen/boxers playing their trade, in a manner in which the risk/reward equations are not what they were before a bounty of neurological studies had come out, and helped cement the correlation between head trauma and brain damage.
Anyway, get this…Monaghan fancies not one not two but three fights against Kovalev. “I think fans would love that, a young, strong guy who can take shots, rumble, back him up…I don’t think he’s fought at Madison Square Garden. I know the people at MSG want it. I know he’s got a gap, he is supposed to fight Andre Ward. I heard he might fight in Russia next. But if that falls through, I’m here.”
Yeah, the 34 year old has thought about this task. A good deal. He told me he watched Marvin Hagler a bunch beating John “The Beast” Mugabi, fighting super smart, respecting the power of the underdog. “The key is boxing smart. Obviously you can’t be taking shots from the guy. You never really see anyone back Kovalev up. I wanna see what happens when that happens. Mike, I got the chin and determination, and I got the balls to go for it.”
