The past year was packed with drama in and out of the ring, including some memorable fights, big surprises and important milestones.
Who and what stood out the most?
Find out when THE RING reveals its annual year-end awards for 2015 in January. The categories: Fighter, Fight, Knockout, Trainer, Upset, Event, Comeback, Round, Prospect and Most Inspirational.
Leading up to the announcement, we will give you the five finalists in one category each day. Day 8: Trainer of the Year
The finalists (in alphabetical order) are.
PETER FURY
Given that the fighting Furys are a close-knit family set-up, Peter Fury was always going to be defined by the successes of his blood relatives. Well, Tyson Fury, his nephew, won the undisputed world heavyweight title in 2015, and Peter, the man forever in Tyson’s ear, is now regarded as one of the best boxing brains in the business.
JOE GALLAGHER
The intensely driven Gallagher ended 2015 with three world champions: Scott Quigg; WBA junior featherweight, Liam Smith; WBO junior middleweight, Anthony Crolla; WBA lightweight. The Englishman has a horde of successful fighters in his camp and is enjoying unprecedented success.
FLOYD MAYWEATHER SR.
Daddy Mayweather brought little Floyd into this world, fell out with him, made amends and then this year helped guide him to a landmark win over his great rival Manny Pacquiao. A fairytale ending to a topsy-turvy story, the Mayweathers, as a team, as a family, seem to have had the last laugh.
ARNULFO OBANDO
Arnulfo Obando is the man behind arguably the most technically efficient boxer in the sport today: Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez. He has helped produce as close to a perfect fighting specimen as we’ve seen for a long, long time.
ABEL SANCHEZ
What sets Abel Sanchez apart is his ability to somehow settle a violent being like Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and have him stick to game plans, patiently bide his time and then explode only when the moment is right. When controlling a man as offensively-minded and physically-gifted as GGG, that’s no mean feat.
