WBO lightweight titleholder Terry Flanagan wants to destroy challenger Derry Mathews on Feb. 13, 2016, in Liverpool, England, before targeting unification fights.

The undefeated Manchester star will be making his second defense after brutally dispatching mandatory challenger Diego Magdaleno inside two rounds in October and he is determined to do a similar job on his countryman.

“Mathews is standing in the way of unification fights and he’s going to get smashed,” said Flanagan who is rated No. 6 by THE RING at 135 pounds. “I’m in boxing to prove that I’m the best by fighting the best and Mathews is slowing me down. I’ll beat him in Liverpool and then move on.”

Flanagan, known as “Turbo”, is England’s first ever lightweight world champion and unification fights with WBC titleholder Jorge Linares and newly crowned WBA boss Anthony Crolla could conceivably be in his future.

“I can’t afford any slip ups against Mathews,” said the 26-year-old southpaw. “Linares is calling me out and then there’s Crolla who Frank Warren has offered half-a-million pounds to fight the winner of me and Mathews.

“It’s hard not to be distracted but it’s all just talk at the end of the day. The cold reality is if I lose then it’s all off the table, so right now I’m concentrating on what I’ve got to do and that’s smash up Mathews.”
