Junior featherweight Chris Avalos will now fight Rey Perez this Saturday night, Top Rank Promotions announced on Monday.
Avalos (25-3, 19 knockouts) will fight Perez (20-6, 5 KOs) in an eight-round bout at the Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco, Texas. The bout will headline a Top Rank card and will be broadcast on UniMas, beginning at 11 p.m. ET/ PT.
Avalos replaces unbeaten Jessie Magdaleno, who suffered an injury during training camp late last week. Magdaleno had to withdraw from the fight when he suffered an injury to his right hand.
“I caught a sparring partner with a nice right hook on top of the head,” said Magdaleno in a release. “That punch caused a lot of pain in my right hand. When I took off my glove, I had swollen knuckles on the hand. I hate not fighting but I will be back as soon as I can.”
Avalos is attempting to rebound from his Feb. 28 technical knockout loss to Carl Frampton. Avalos had won six fights in a row before the Frampton fight.
No excuses. I just got caught. I trained hard for that title fight and would like to get a rematch. That’s my goal. Rey Perez is next. I’ve seen video of a couple of his fights, so I know what he is all about. Even though I wasn’t scheduled to fight, I had been training for quite a while when my manager, Mike Criscio got the call for our team to head to Texas.
In the opening bout of the “Solo Boxeo” telecast, Casey Ramos will fight Daniel Evangelista in an eight-round, junior lightweight bout.
Ramos hails from Austin, Texas.
