Is the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Andre Berto fight a done deal?

TMZ, the celebrity website, is reporting that the fighters have reached a deal to face one another on Sept. 12 in Las Vegas even though no official announcement has been made.

However, Los Angeles Times boxing writer Lance Pugmire has tweeted that TMZ is jumping the gun: “Told by official charged with finalizing deal that @FloydMayweather @AndreBerto not yet set. Berto still not finalized as opponent.”

Mayweather typically announces his fights through social media.

TMZ claims that “we’re told from both camps that it’s a done deal and the two will fight in Vegas on September 12th.”

The website also quotes Berto, who will make a fortune if he fights Mayweather: “It’s a pleasure and an honor to be in this position and I’m looking forward to capitalizing on every moment of it.”

Berto has been rumored to be the leading candidate to fight Mayweather for some time. Another rumor is that the fight could land on CBS, as opposed to pay-per-view. Again, however, nothing is official.

Mayweather is coming off a one-sided victory over Manny Pacquiao in the richest fight in history on May 2, a dull fight that disappointed many fans.

Berto is a well-known former welterweight titleholder with an entertaining style. He has beaten Steve Upsher Chambers and Josesito Lopez in succession since losing back-to-back fights in 2012 and 2013.
