Different fight date, same story for Roberto Garcia. In an over-three month span, Garcia has left the boxing world bewildered over his actions.
In his place, Phil Lo Greco hopes to make the most of an opportunity.
Errol Spence Jr. (16-0, 13 knockouts) will now face Lo Greco on Saturday night in a 10-round welterweight bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. The bout will open the NBC “Premier Boxing Champions” telecast, beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET/ 5:30 p.m. PT.
Garcia withdrew from the fight earlier this week as reports surfaced that he was having difficulty making the 147-pound weight limit. Rumors came up afterward stating Garcia withdrew from the fight for “personal reasons.”
Whatever the reason may be, this is the second time Garcia has withdrawn from a high-profile fight. Garcia was scheduled to fight Shawn Porter on March 13 at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif. but withdrew two days before the fight, reporting from dehydration and B12 poisoning. Garcia was replaced on the card by Erick Bone.
In his last bout on March 6, Lo Greco (26-1, 14 KOs) defeated Rafael Cobos over eight one-sided rounds. He had not fought in almost two years since being dominated throughout 10 rounds in a unanimous decision loss to Porter.
In the main event, Adrien Broner and Porter will square off in a 12-round bout, contracted at a catchweight limit of 144 pounds.
