Oscar Valdez has feasted on modest opposition in recent eight-round fights and has now graduated to facing opposition in 10-round bouts. Valdez will fight Ruben Tamayo at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. on June 27, Top Rank Promotions announced on Wednesday afternoon.
The announcement confirmed what Valdez already had told RingTV on Saturday night.
The featherweight bout will precede the 12-round welterweight bout between Timothy Bradley and Jessie Vargas. While HBO will televise the Bradley-Vargas bout live, the network will likely show highlights of the Valdez bout.
Valdez (15-0, 14 knockouts) is considered one of boxing’s brightest prospects. Having represented Mexico in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games, Valdez has had a solid start to his professional career.
In his last bout on April 11, Valdez knocked out Jose Ramirez in the third round in Laredo, Texas. His most impressive win to date was a seventh round stoppage win over former world title challenger Alberto Garza on Nov. 15.
“Oscar Valdez has carried his beloved Mexican Olympic flag into the pro ranks,” said Todd duBoef, president of Top Rank, in a press release. “Fans love to watch him fight because they know he brings dynamite in both fists. His style of fighting – and winning – has the potential to make him one of the most popular fighters in the world. So far, Oscar has been nothing short of sensational.”
Valdez’s accomplishments as a pro have not gone unnoticed. He is currently ranked number 14 by the IBF and number 15 by the WBC at junior lightweight.
In his last bout on Dec. 20, Tamayo (25-5-4, 17 KOs) was stopped in the fifth round by Jesus Cuellar in Shelton, Wash. The loss snapped a four-bout unbeaten streak for Tamayo.
