RING and WBC flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez made quite an impression with his two-round demolition of Edgar Sosa on the undercard of Gennady Golovkin-Willie Monroe last month.

The hammerfisted Nicaraguan successfully defended his titles for the second time, despatching former WBC 108-pound titlist Sosa with relative ease in front of the HBO cameras. Gonzalez (43-0, 37 knockouts) earned rave reviews with his eye-opening performance.

The victory earned Gonzalez the No. 2 spot pound-for-pound with THE RING Magazine.

In early June “Chocolatito” returned to the gym, his manager Carlos Blandon told RingTV.com: “Roman started running and [returned to] the gym a week ago, [shadowboxing] and doing certain light workouts, he feels [in] good condition.”

It remains early days and Blandon was non-committal on who his fighter will face when he returns to action, though he does have a target date.

“We hope to fight in August or September in the U.S. once again,” he said. “We are extremely grateful and blessed with our promoter, Teiken, who managed to get Roman to fight on HBO and work with K2 Promotions, which did an amazing promotion. It worked out better than planned, and we are thankful to God.

“For now we are focused on a possible fight in August or September so Roman is preparing for his next rival.”
