HOUSTON, Texas — In front of an overflow crowd inside an atrium at Minute Maid Park, Canelo Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 knockouts) and James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) both weighed in at 154.5 pounds, half a pound within the contracted weight of 155 pounds, for their fight on Saturday at the ballpark. The bout will be televised live on HBO’s World Championship Boxing, beginning at 9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT.
The co-main event between Humberto Soto and Frankie Gomez was a different story. Soto weighed in at 142.5 pounds, but Gomez weighed in at 147.5, six pounds more than the contracted weight of 141 pounds. After the weigh-in, HBO and Golden Boy Promotions decided to pull the plug on the fight when Gomez could not shed 2.5 pounds to make a 145-pound catchweight that was agreed upon by both fighters’ camps yesterday.
Unbeaten featherweight prospect Joseph Diaz, Jr. and Giovani Delgado both weighed in at 126.5 pounds for their scheduled 10-round bout. Heavyweight Taishan Dong weighed in at 289 pounds, while his opponent Terrell Woods tipped the scales at 248.5 pounds. The Diaz-Delgado and Dong-Woods bouts will be part of the international broadcast.
The rest of the undercard weigh-in results can be viewed on the final bout sheet for the Golden Boy Promotions/Leija-Battah Promotions show:
