Frankie Gavin securing a dream world title shot against Kell Brook has led to a vacancy on another Matchroom Sports show in Birmingham, England, on May 9, which will now be filled by London 2012 Olympic gold medalist Anthony Joshua.

Gavin was originally set to face Chris van Heerden in an eliminator but received a golden ticket upgrade to face Brook on May 30 which, understandably, forced his withdrawal.

Joshua will now join former world middleweight title challenger Matthew Macklin and the unbeaten junior bantamweight Kal Yafai, who are also scheduled to appear in Birmingham.

The 25 year old Joshua recently overcame a serious back injury to post a third round stoppage win over American Jason Gavern, and will be looking to stay sharp ahead of his biggest test against American Kevin Johnson on May 30, in London.

“The Brook fight is a huge opportunity for Frankie and it means he cannot fight on May 9,” said promoter Eddie Hearn, via a press release issued by Matchroom. “It is likely that Anthony will now replace him and we will make a full announcement on Monday regarding the card.”
