Vasyl Lomachenko added to Mayweather-Pacquiao undercard
MONTREAL, Quebec, Canada – Two-time Olympic gold medalist Vasyl Lomachnenko will defend his WBO featherweight title against Gamalier Rodriguez on the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao undercard, according to the Ukrainian amateur star’s manager Egis Klimas.
Lomachenko-Rodriguez will be one of the three televised fights on the PPV telecast.
Lomachenko (3-1, 1 knockout) is coming off a one-sided unanimous decision victory over Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo on the Pacquiao-Chris Algieri undercard last November in Macau. Lomachenko may be used to fighting in the limelight but on May 2 he will fight on boxing’s biggest stage.
“This is like an actor winning an Academy Award,” Klimas told RingTV.com.
Klimas was present at today’s press conference for the HBO tripleheader at the Bell Centre where his fighter Sergey Kovalev will defend his light heavyweight titles against former champ Jean Pascal. The televised undercard will feature Vyacheslav Glazkov-Steve Cunningham in an IBF heavyweight eliminator and Vasily Lepikhin-Isaac Chilemba.
“This is the first time we see three Eastern-European boxers on a big show like this on HBO,” said Klimas. “Lomachenko is flying in tonight to support these fighters.”
Klimas said the entire Russian and Ukranian contingent will take in the Montreal Canadiens hockey game tonight at the Bell Centre.
