De La Hoya: Canelo Alvarez will fight on May 2 regardless of opponent

Canelo Alvarez is adamant about fighting on May 2, according to Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya. Alvarez’s target is Miguel Cotto, but the Mexican star is willing to fight others if a deal can’t be reached with the RING middleweight champ.

De La Hoya stands firmly behind the 24-year-old former junior middleweight champ’s assertion that he will be in action on that Saturday, which falls on the weekend before Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo.

“Regardless of who Canelo fights, he is going on May 2,” De La Hoya told RingTV.com on Saturday.

Cotto has been in talks for an HBO Pay-Per-View-televised showdown against Alvarez, the RING’s No. 1-rated junior middleweight behind RING champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Mayweather, meanwhile, announced last month that he “would love to fight” Pacquiao on May 2, this amid ongoing Alvarez-Cotto negotiations to fight on that date, which Mayweather calls “Cinco de Mayweather.”

Talks for Mayweather-Pacquiao have, in turn, been confirmed by Mayweather camp member Sam Watson as well as Pacquiao associates, Michael Koncz, the fighter’s adviser, and Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, his promoter.

Although Alvarez has agreed to his side of the terms to face Cotto, the Puerto Rican’s boxer’s adviser, Gaby Penagaricano, characterized the deal as being only “50 percent” complete, adding that Cotto has other options. Among those other opportunities, according to Penagaricano, is a rematch with Mayweather, who unanimously decisioned Cotto in May 2012.
