Al Haymon is “Don King for the new millennium,” said boxing historian Thomas Hauser of the adviser in a Dec. 22 Sports Illustrated article. “He’s making a play to take over boxing.”

The recipient of the 2013 Cus D’Amato “Manager Of The Year” award by the Boxing Writers Association of America, Haymon’s stable includes Floyd Mayweather Jr., Adonis Stevenson, Amir Khan, Deontay Wilder, Marcos Maidana, Adrien Broner and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., among many others.

In addition to a potential groundbreaking $20 million, 24-fight deal with NBC, the SI story addresses, in part, Haymon’s union with Showtime as well as his adversarial relationship with HBO and Top Rank Promotions CEO Bob Arum, among other topics.

As the promoter for WBC titleholder Bermane Stiverne, King worked with Haymon to put together the Haitian boxer’s Jan. 17 heavyweight title defense against Wilder to be televised on Showtime from the MGM Grand.

King called Haymon “a brilliant and intelligent, young man,” adding, “Al Haymon is the icing on the cake,” during a recent conference call interview when asked by RingTV.com to express his thoughts on the the adviser.

“He’s like a treat during a glorious dinner,” said King, 83. “I think Al Haymon is great…I’m so happy that I’ve had an opportunity to meet and to greet and to discuss with a guy like Al Haymon.”

King will co-promote Stiverne-Wilder with Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya, who continues to promote a number of Haymon’s fighters.
