RING No. 1-rated flyweight Juan Francisco Estrada, holder of the division’s WBA and WBO belts, unanimously decisioned Joebert Alvarez in a 10-round, non-title fight on Saturday in Mexico.

Fighting at 113 pounds, Estrada (31-2, 22 knockouts) won by scores of 98-92, 99-91 and 99-91 against Alvarez (14-1-1, 6 KOs), who was fighting outside of the Philippines for only the second time.

Estrada, 24, last suffered defeat by unanimous decision to RING champion and WBC beltholder Roman Gonzalez in November 2012. In his following bout, Estrada defeated Brian Viloria by split decision to win the WBA and WBO straps. Before facing Alvarez he was last in the ring for an 11th-round technical knockout of former junior flyweight beltholder Giovani Segura.

“I knew that Joebert Alvarez has very good speed and he is an impressive boxer, and he lived up to what I expected,” said Estrada, 24, who caused a second-round cut over Alvarez’s right eye and had both of his eyes bleeding by the ninth.

“We both fought hard, and with God’s grace I was victorious. I worked diligently to prepare for this fight, as I do for all my fights. My training, discipline and preparation paid off and brought a successful outcome.”

A 25-year-old southpaw and native of General Santos City, Philippines, Alvarez’s last victory was a unanimous decision over Julian Rivera in April.

“This was a great fight to witness, because it went all 10 rounds. The fans went wild, and it was an exciting fight to watch,” said Carlos Moncada, CEO of Latin Sports, Estrada’s promoter.

“Both of these fine young men fought very valiantly. We were confident that Juan ‘Gallo’ Estrada would come out on top, and we are proud of the champ.”
