Former lightweight title challenger Michael Katsidis will pursue his third straight victory in as many fights this year when he meets Tommy Coyle in a lightweight bout on Oct. 25 at the Ice Arena in Hull, Yorkshire, England.

The announcement was made by Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport in a release on Thursday.

Katsidis (30-6, 24 knockouts), 34, had announced his retirement in February of 2013 but returned last March with a third-round stoppage of Eddy Comaro, followed by last month’s unanimous decision over Graham Earl.

Coyle (19-2, 8 KOs), 24, has won four straight bouts, one by stoppage since being stopped in the 10th round by Derry Matthews in July 2013.

One of Katsidis’ biggest victories was a third round stoppage of England’s previously undefeated Kevin Mitchell in May 2010 in London.

“It is nice to be fighting in England again and I am very much looking forward to the fight with Tommy. I have always enjoyed the passion of the fans and I feel at home when I fight there,” said Katsidis, whose manager and trainer is Brendon Smith.

“I would like to thank Eddie Hearn and Brendon Smith for putting this fight together and I am working very hard in camp at present. I would also like to thank Tommy for putting his hand up to fight me. I have had a number of offers from the UK and I am happy to come to Hull for the fight.”

Nicknamed “The Great” and known for his warrior style, Katsidis reunited with Smith in January. At the time, Katsidis had been out of action since April 2012 when he lost by majority decision to Albert Mensah.

Katsidis earned interim WBO belts with a fifth round stoppage over Earl in February 2007, and a split decision over Vicente Escobedo in September 2009.

Katsidis has lost exciting decisions to ex-beltholders Juan Diaz, Robert Guerrero and Ricky Burns and was stopped in the ninth and 10th rounds by titleholders Juan Manuel Marquez and Joel Casamayor, respectively.

The ninth round knockout loss to Marquez in November 2010, came a month after the death of Katsidis’ 31-year-old brother, Stathi Katsidis, a champion jockey in Australia.

Coyle is coming off unanimous decision over Michael Ansah in May that followed a 12th round stoppage win over Daniel Eduardo Bizuela in February.

“It’s great to be fighting someone of Michael Katsidis’ caliber. There were many big names touted for this fight and I am delighted that it’s Michael I’ll be taking on,” said Coyle.

“He’s been in with Mitchell and Ricky Burns over here and also shared the ring with Robert Guerrero and Juan Manuel Marquez. So to beat him will be a huge achievement and a great scalp to have on my record.”

In another bout on the Katsidis-Coyle card, lightweight Luke Campbell, an Olympic gold medalist, will be after his eighth straight win against Brizuela, 28.

“This is a big step-up for me but one I feel that I am ready for,” said Campbell, who is also scheduled to fight an opponent to be determined at Wembley Arena on Sept. 20.

“Brizuela’s fight with Coyle was unbelievable and I know I am in for a serious night’s work. But I’m 7-0 now and with more rounds under my belt in September, I’m confident I can land my first title.”

Campbell, 26, was last in action for a second round knockout of Steve Trumble on August 16, and Brizuela unanimously decisioned Jorge Samuel Fredes last month.

“Tommy Coyle, who now has a reputation of being in regular wars, fights perhaps one of the most world-renowned warriors in Michael Katsidis while for Olympic champion Luke Campbell, this is the acid test,” said Hearn.

“Brizuela, who came back from an impressive win following his fight of the year with Tommy, is a huge step up for Luke and one we believe he is ready for. Victory for both men will set up the battle of Hull in 2015, which will be a defining sporting occasion for the city.”

In other fights on the card, junior featherweight Gavin McDonnell and junior featherweight Gamal Yafai will appear in separate bouts.
