WASHINGTON, D.C. — It was nearly 8:30 on Monday night, and Marcos Maidana, trainer Robert Garcia and his camp members had already spent four hours on an airplane that was delayed at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey due to a severe thunderstorm.

Maidana’s scheduled visit to DAR Constitution Hall, along with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in advance of their Sept. 13 rematch, is part of an ambitious five-city tour comprised of an earlier stop in New York City that also includes stops in Chicago and San Antonio on Tuesday and a final presser in Los Angeles on Thursday.

Fans arrived at DAR as early as 5:30 p.m. for the scheduled 7:15 start.

But with Mayweather also delayed out of Tetorboro Airport, Maidana and Garcia conducted a 15-minute over-the-telephone conference call with several reporters who crowded around a small cell phone owned by a publicist.

Golden Boy vice president and matchmaker Eric Gomez translated for Maidana.

“In the first fight, nobody gave me a chance. We were the underdog and he was the favorite,” said Maidana (35-4, 31 knockouts), loser of to Mayweather (46-0, 26 KOs) by majority decision.

“Nobody thought that I was going to win, but we proved everybody wrong, and I thought that we won the fight. I’m used to being the underdog, like I was with Victor Ortiz, Adrien Broner and Amir Khan. I’m used to that role, and I’ve either won or been close to winning, and I think that this is my time now, and I feel that this time, I will win. I will win the rematch.”

The loss ended a streak of four consecutive victories, three of which were knockouts, for Maidana.

In the meantime, D.C. rapper Wale entertained those in attendance, hoping to get something going prior to the 10 p.m. deadline for closing of DAR.
