IBF titleholder Shawn Porter said that he expects Kell Brook to be “more technical than just about anybody that I’ve fought” when they meet on August 16 at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., on Showtime.

Porter (24-0-1, 15 knockouts), 26, is coming off a fourth round stoppage of two-division titlist Paulie Malignaggi in April that followed his unanimous decision over Devon Alexander for the belt in December.

Brook (32-0, 22 KOs), 28, will be after his fifth consecutive stoppage win when he faces Porter, his past three victories coming in the eighth round over Carson Jones in July 2013, the fourth over former titleholder Vyacheslav Senchenko in October and Alvaro Robles in the eighth in March.

The following are some comments from Porter regarding his upcoming bout.

Shawn Porter on Brook’s skill-level compared to those he already has fought:

“I would say that from the fighter’s that I’ve faced, recently, and in the past, that Kell Brook is more technical than just about anybody that I’ve fought up until this point. I do think that will make a difference in the way that I fight.

“Someone that is technical and throws good, straight punches and who is a technical fighter, it makes you become more technical and you don’t make as many mistakes as maybe you would with someone who is more unorthodox.

“Take, for example, Devon Alexander. Coming in against him, I knew that I had to be more aggressive and that I had to take control of the fight. I knew that I had to push him around.

“Someone that is technical, they can step and throw good, long shots and make you not be as aggressive or not be as athletic as you usually are, so I think, more than anything, that he will challenge me, that way.

“You know he may force me to be more technical and more athletic and crazy than I usually get in the ring, with the wide shots and stuff like that…The fact of the matter is that I’ve wanted this fight for a long time and I’ve been waiting for this fight for a long time now.

“Now that we finally have this August 16 date, this really puts things into perspective and we will continue the things that we’ve been doing. Nothing is going to change, except that we will be picking it up a little bit more.”

“I have to appreciate and respect his skill level and that I’m getting in there with a guy that is 32-0 and that there is a reason that he’s 32-0. There is something going on there.”

On the notion by Brook that Porter has a lot more to risk:

“I always consider myself to be more at risk than anyone that I get into the ring with, whether you’re 32-0 or 0-32. If you’re 32-0, that means that I lost to a good fighter and that I’m not as good as everybody thought.

“If I lose to a fighter who is 0-32 guy, then that means that I lost to a guy who never has won a fight and that I’m not as good as everybody thought. So, the risk is always high for me and my team. But we don’t focus on the risk; we focus on the reward.

“We focus on being prepared and we focus on fight the best that we can and we look to win. With that being said, you know and I do understand that my risk level is always going to be high but I’m always going to step up to the challenge.”

On the pressure and expectations following his dominance of Malignaggi:

“I think that the expectation level at this point is very high but I’m okay with that because he’s not higher than my dad’s. I don’t think that adds any more pressure for me. It just makes everything a lot more fun and enjoyable.

“That’s just me. I’m different from most people. Most people would be in certain situations and feel a certain level of pressure but I just feel that with the level of excitement, it’s an opportunity to literally step up and be better.

“We’re always looking to get into the ring and to be better than our last performance and we don’t shed too much light on our previous performance. We go into the ring prepared to be better and that’s all.”

On the fight’s outcome:

“I don’t have a prediction but I will say this: I knocked out Paulie in less than five rounds. At this point, I’m a little spoiled. If this fight doesn’t go the distance, then I will be more than happy and pleased with my performance.

“But at this point, I am prepared for a 12-round fight. I do expect Kell Brook to come here and to show why he is 32-0 and to make the fight tough.”
