RING ratings update: Dib bids featherweight goodbye
This past weekend hosted no significant fights among top contenders, with only one movement in the ratings.
Jr. lightweight: Billy Dib, 37-3, 21 KOs, won a wide ten round decision over unrated Alberto Garza at 130. No change.
Featherweight: Dib was ranked No. 8 in the featherweight division. Since he is now at 130 we will take him out of the 126 rankings. A discussion was had by the panel and it has been decided that Marvin Sonsona, 19-1-1 (15 KOs), will enter the featherweight rankings at No. 10, with Ronny Rios (23-0, 10 KOs) moving up to No. 8 and Lee Selby (19-1, 7 KOs) moving up to No. 9. Jesus Cuellar (24-1, 18 KOs) was also considered but was denied entry at this time due to his lack of activity, although that may soon change since Cuellar is now working with top trainer Robert Garcia in Oxnard, Calfornia.
NEW THIS WEEK:
Division: featherweight; Country: Philippines; Record: 19-1-1 (15 KOs); Age: 23; Height: 5-foot-7; Stance: southpaw; Who: Sonsona started boxing as a 7-year-old and had a successful amateur career before turning pro in 2007 at the age of 16. He fought 13 times before venturing beyond his native Philippines, winning the WBO junior bantamweight title in Canada against Jose Lopez, but was stripped of the title for missing weight in his next fight. He then jumped to junior featherweight and challenged Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. for a title, but lost by fourth-round knockout. The southpaw’s most impressive performance to date was as a featherweight early this year, when he knocked out former titleholder Akifumi Shimoda in sensational fashion. He then avenged, somewhat, his loss to Vazquez with a split decision on the Cotto-Martinez undercard.
