CARSON, Calif. – Vasyl Lomachenko defeated Gary Russell Jr. by a majority decision to win the vacant WBO featherweight title Saturday at the StubHub Center.
Russell (24-1, 14 knockouts) was the busier boxer for most of the fight but missed a high percentage of punches and landed few hard shots. Meanwhile, Lomachenko (2-1, 1 KO) was more efficient and powerful. He threw fewer punches but landed a high percentage and hurt Russell on several occasions.
Russell was hurt in the fifth, seventh, 10th and 12th rounds. Lomachenko might’ve scored a knockout in the final round but ran out of time.
The scores were 116-112, 116-112 and 114-114. THE RING had it 115-113 for Lomachenko.
