The pride of Puerto Rico built the foundation of his legend at welterweight where he won the IBF title and defended it 15 times against many contenders, such as then-undefeated Yory Boy Campas and Oba Carr, and veterans like Hector Camacho. Trinidad was a devastating puncher but his biggest wins were decisions over U.S. Olympic gold medalists Pernell Whitaker, Oscar De La Hoya and David Reid. He also unified the WBA and IBF 154-pound titles by outpointing Reid and stopping Fernando Vargas in Round 12 of their thrilling clash.
Won welterweight title(s): On June 19, 1993, stopping Maurice Blocker in Round 2 to claim the IBF belt; and on Sept. 18, 1999, narrowly outpointing De La Hoya via controversial majority decision to win the WBC belt.
Fought for middleweight title(s): On May 12, 2001, stopping William Joppy in Round 5 to claim the WBA belt; and on Sept. 9, 2001, getting stopped by Bernard Hopkins in Round 12 of their IBF-WBA-WBC unification bout.
