Junior middleweight veterans Delvin Rodriguez and Joachim Alcine will fight in a Friday Night Fights main event on May 16 at Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Star Boxing and Choko Boxing announced on Tuesday.

Olympic Stadium hasn’t hosted professional boxing since the classic first confrontation between Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran in June of 1980, according to the press release for the Rodriguez-Alcine bout.

The crossroads match will be the first fight for Rodriguez (28-7-1, 21 knockouts) since he suffered a third-round stoppage to Miguel Cotto last October. The 33-year-old native of the Dominican Republic had established himself as a 154-pound contender with his thrilling draw with Pawell Wolak in July of 2011, the BWAA’s selection of Fight of the Year, and his rematch decision over the tough Polish pressure fighter in December of that year.

Though the Danbury, Conn. Resident lost a one-sided decision to then-undefeated Austin Trout, he bounced back with stoppage victories over George Tahdooahnippah and Freddy Hernandez before the Cotto setback.

Alcine (35-7-1, 21 KOs) has recently rebounded from his own setbacks. After upsetting fellow Montreal-based middleweight standout David Lemieux via majority decision, the 38-year-old Haiti native lost five consecutive bouts — including a first-round KO to former middleweight title challenger Matthew Macklin in September 2012, a 12th-round stoppage to British titleholder Brian Rose last April and an eight-round decision unbeaten prosepct Julian Williams last June – before scoring back-to-back stoppages against journeyman and novice competition earlier this year.

Alcine won the WBA 154-pound title by outpointing Travis Simms in 2007. After one title defense, he lost the belt via six-round KO to Daniel Santos one year later.

“It is with great pride that my first comeback professional boxing event will be televised in America on such a prestigious outlet,” Alexandre Choko of Choko Boxing stated in a press release. “ESPN's Friday Night Fights is the equivalent of Monday Night Football to boxing fans. It's an honor to be part of such an exciting production.”

Choko, the author of the book The Future of Boxing, recently teamed up with Joe DeGuardia, Star Boxing CEO and currently President of the Boxing Promoters Association. The Rodriguez-Alcine card is co-promoted by Star Boxing and Choko Boxing.
