Lem’s Latest: Joel Diaz Jr. tops May 16 ShoBox card

Unbeaten featherweight Joel Diaz Jr. will face once-beaten Tyler Asselstine on the May 16 at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn., as part of a doubleheader on Showtime's ShoBox: The New Generation, promoters Lou DiBella and Jean Pascal Promotions announced on Monday.

The 21-year-old recent signee with DiBella Entertainment and son of trainer Joel Diaz Sr., Diaz is 15-0 with 12 knockouts. The 27-year-old Asselstine is 14-1 with 7 stoppage victories. Also on the card is junior middleweight Frank Galarza (13-0-2, 9 KOs), who faces Sebastien Bouchard (9-0, 2 KOs) in a scheduled eight-round bout.

"We are very excited to be returning to Foxwoods, which is truly one of our favorite venues for boxing," said DiBella. "We staged a tremendous card on Showtime in January and we are looking to follow that up with another action-packed card from top to bottom on May 16."

 



UNBEATEN FEATHERWEIGHT JORGE LARA SIGNS WITH SAMPSON LEWKOWICZ

Unbeaten Mexican junior featherweight Jorge Lara has signed a promotional agreement with Sampson Boxing, promoter Sampson Lewkowicz announced on Monday.

A 23-year-old southpaw from Guadalajara, Lara (25-0-1, 17 knockouts) has scored knockouts in six of his past seven fights and was last in action for a unanimous decision over Jairo Hernandez in January.

"I am very happy and thankful to God for allowing me to be a part of one the best promotional companies in the world," said Lara. "Thanks to its President Sampson Lewkowicz. I promise not to let him down and I will always give my best effort."

Lara's first fight under his new promotional banner will be announced shortly in the super bantamweights division.

"I welcome Jorge 'Pilon' Lara to join my stable of world class super bantamweights," said Lewkowicz, "such as Kiko Martinez, Hugo 'Cuatito' Ruiz, Oscar Escandon, Jonathan Guzman, Rocco Santomauro and Jonathan Arenas."

 

ROBERTO GARCIA-VICTOR CAYO ON ESPN THURSDAY NIGHT FIGHTS

Welterweight Roberto Garcia (34-3, 22 KOs) of Weslaco, Texas, will face Victor Cayo (32-4, 23 KOs) of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on a special Thursday edition of ESPN's Friday Night Fights at Hialeah Park in South Florida, Warriors Boxing announced on Monday.

In the middleweight co-feature, Jonathan González (17-0-1, 14 KOs) of San Juan, Puerto Rico, will face Rogelio Medina (32-5, 26 KOs) of Sonora, Mexico.

 

K2 PROMOTIONS WINS PURSE BID FOR OLA AFOLABI-PAWEL KOLODZIEJ IBF ELIMINATOR

With a bid of $40,000, K2 Promotions won the right to stage an IBF eliminator between Ola Afolabi (20-3-4, 9 KOs) and Pawel Kolodziej (33-0, 18 KOs), the winner of which would become the mandatory challenger to Yoan Pablo Hernandez, Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions confirmed on Monday.

"That is true, right now looking for the best show to put the fight on. It is a great matchup between two international fighters," said Loeffler, whose organization was unchallenge in the purse bid. "No date yet, waiting to see which show works the best. It will be in 2014,but we don't know the month either, yet."
