After an opening round that featured upsets, close decisions, and knockouts, the semifinals of the Boxcino lightweight tournament may provide more surprises.

The semifinals will take place this Friday night at the 4 Bears Casino and Lodge in New Town, North Dakota. ESPN2 will televise both eight-round bouts live on an Friday Night Fights telecast.

One bout will pit opposite ends of experience in the pro ranks as Christopher Rudd will square off against Petr Petrov. The winner of the Rudd-Petrov fight will face the winner of the Miguel Gonzalez-Fernando Carcamo bout.

Out of the eight participants in the tournament, Rudd had the least experience in the pro ranks. That did not stop him from winning a seven round split decision over Yakubu Amidu.

Each quarterfinal bout was six rounds. Under the Boxcino tournament rules, in case of a draw, which occurred in the Rudd-Amidu bout, a tiebreaker round was added to determine the winner.

Prior to the Amidu fight, Rudd (13-1, 8 KOs) had only faced two fighters with winnings records.

Based on that, Petrov could be the favored fighter out of the two, considering he has almost three times as many fights as a pro and has fought better opposition than Rudd.

Petrov (33-4-2, 15 KOs) landed the more consistent punches in winning a decision over  fellow Russian Fedor Papazov.

Petrov challenged for a world title in September of 2011, losing by knockout in the fourth round to Marcos Maidana.

It will be a classic match-up between boxer versus puncher when Gonzalez faces Carcamo.

Gonzalez, who hails from Cleveland, punched a ticket to the semi-final with a split decision win over Miguel Angel Mendoza. Gonzalez piled enough points early in the fight before tiring and fending off an aggressive Mendoza.

Gonzalez (23-3, 16 KOs), who also has wins over Humberto Toledo, Josenilson Dos Santos, and Miguel Acosta, has now won three fights in a row.

Carcamo (16-5, 13 KOs), who resides in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico may be the most dangerous puncher and the fighter with the most momentum in the tournament.

Carcamo has won his last six bouts in a row, all by knockout. Carcamo overwhelmed Samuel Kotey Neequaye, eventually stopping him in the second round to move on in the tournament.

The Boxcino lightweight tournament final will take place on May 23, likely at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, NY.

Banner Promotions is promoting the card.
