Featherweight boxer Oscar Gonzalez has been pronounced brain dead as a result of injuries he suffered during a 10th-round stoppage loss to Jesus Galicia on Saturday in Mexico City, according to various reports.

WBC Secretary General Mauricio Sulaiman said that he was notified of the circumstances late Saturday night by his staff members, who were ringside for the WBC silver title bout.

Sulaiman was informed that doctors' awaiting Gonzalez's family members to arrive in order to make a decision on whether or not to revive the fighter.

"My staff members called me at midnight. They had gone to the hospital with him and he has suffered a very critical mental injury. It's so unfortunate. It's a really, really sad situation. They went to the hospital and they stayed with him, and they called me immediately," said Sulaiman.

"We have a confirmed insurance policy for a fight for the WBC title of $50,000 that will go to the family. The doctors are administering respiratory aide while waiting for the family to get together and to make a decision. Basically, they said that they are waiting for a miracle."

Gonzalez (23-3, 14 knockouts), 23, had won three straight fights entering the bout with Galicia (13-7, 8 KOs), including a unanimous decision over former 122-pound beltholder Rico Ramos in April of last year.
