Mikey Garcia stopped Rocky Martinez with a body shot 56 seconds into the eighth round to take Martinez’s WBO junior lightweight title Saturday night in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Garcia had dominated the sixth and seventh rounds to take control of the fight and picked up where he left off in the eighth. The deciding blow was a left hook to the side, which took Martinez’s legs out from under him. He failed to get up by the count of 10.

Garcia (33-0, 28 knockouts) went down in the second round but wasn’t hurt. And Martinez (27-2-2, 16 KOs) held his own boxing from the outside for five rounds.

However, Garcia began to land hard, accurate punches with great consistency in the sixth and a fading Martinez had no answer.

Garcia came in three pounds overweight for his last fight, a featherweight bout against Juan Manuel Lopez in June. The fight Saturday was his first at 130 pounds.
