Demetrius Andrade defeated Vanes Martirosyan by a split decision to win the vacant WBO junior middleweight title on the Mikey Garcia-Rocky Martinez card Saturday in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Andrade (20-0, 13 knockouts) controlled the fight with a consistent jab and many more power shots than Martirosyan, although he was never able to hurt Martirosyan (33-1-1, 21 KOs).

Martirosyan’s best moment came in the second round, when he put Andrade down with a left hook. However, aside from that, Andrade fairly clearly outworked Martirosyan to earn the decision.

The scores were: 114-113 and 117-110 for Andrade and 115-112 for Martirosyan. The 115-112 score, by judge Javier Alvarez, is unexplainable.

Martirosyan and Andrade both fought for the U.S. in the Olympics, Martirosyan in 2004 and Adrade in 2008.

A full report will follow shortly.
