The main event fighters of Saturday’s Showtime Championship Boxing doubleheader made weight on Friday at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. Abner Mares weighed in at 125.5 pounds for his WBC featherweight title defense against Jhonny Gonzalez, who weighed 125 pounds.

Mares (26-0-1, 14 knockouts) said a sparring session they had back in 2006 has no relevance on their fight.

“I was just starting out, I had five or six fights, when we sparred. I’m a different fighter now and so is he,” said the Guadalajara-born Southern Californian, who has held titles at bantamweight and junior featherweight. “Jhonny can punch and he can box. But I’m ready for anything, fans are going to get a treat.”

Gonzalez (54-8, 46 KOs), a tall and rangy veteran who used to struggled to make 118 pounds, said making weight was the least of his problems.

“I made weight two days ago,” said the Mexico City native, who held a bantamweight title and the WBC featherweight belt that Mares now holds.

WBC 122-pound titleholder Victor Terrazas (37-2-1, 21 KOs), who defends his belt against unbeaten former bantamweight beltholder Leo Santa Cruz, weighed in at 121 pounds. Santa Cruz (24-0-1, 14 KOs) weighed in at 121.3 pounds.

The doubleheader takes place at StubHUb Center in Carson, Calif.
