Did HBO’s ‘Champions Dinner’ snub Rigondeaux

Fighters Network

This past weekend in Los Angeles, HBO Sports had a private dinner that they called the “Dinner of Champions.”

Fighters in attendance were Adonis Stevenson, Ruslan Provodnikov, Mike Alvarado, Gennady Golovkin, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Nonito Donaire, Juan Manuel Marquez, Terence Crawford, and Mikey Garcia, based on a picture tweeted by Provodnikov.

When reached by e-mail for a list of those in attendance, HBO informed RingTV.com that it was a private dinner and that the guest list was not available.

Noticeably not in attendance was Guillermo Rigondeaux, who defeated Donaire by unanimous decision in April. A member of Rigondeaux’s team confirmed to RingTV.com that he wasn’t issued an invite.

If it was a dinner of champions, as the menu in this Rachel Donaire picture shows, why wouldn’t the man who dethroned Donaire be given an invite? After all, he rendered Donaire belt-less after their fight.

Rigondeaux has fallen out of favor with HBO due to the manner in which he fights, according to Bob Arum after the Donaire victory. Arum has tried talking to the network regarding bringing him back, but the network is uninterested according to a tweet by ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael.

For now, Top Rank may have to resort to putting Rigondeaux on pay-per-view undercards, which are handled exclusively by the promoter, in order to get him involved again with the network.
