Thurman-Chaves round-by-round updates

RingTV.com will be posting live, round-by-round updates on this page during Saturday night’s Showtime-televised welterweight bout between Keith “One Time” Thurman (21-0, 19 knockouts) and Diego Chaves (22-1, 18 KOs).

The fight will precede lightweights Omar Figueroa and Nihito Arakawa, which is the lead-in bout to the main event featuring Andre Berto against Jesus Soto Karass. The broadcast begins at 9 p.m. ET.

Round 1: Heavily tattooed Chaves throws first left hook and a right. Good jabs from Thurman, Chaves swinging hard with rights and left. Right to the body by Thurman, who is jabbing and retreating. Chaves comes straight forward. Good jab also from Chaves. Left from Thurman and another left to the body. Counter right to the body by Chaves. Thurman’s boxing and jabbing. Left to the head by Chaves counters Thurman’s. Solid punches. Good uppercut from Chaves. They trade lefts. Another good left from Chaves, who closes with a left and a right. Chaves round, 10-9.

Round 2: Chaves not showing rust from a 308-day ring absence. Chaves continues moving straight forward, dictating the pace. Good left and right uppercuts from Chaves. Solid right by Chaves. Good shots to the body by Chaves. Double-left hook by Thurman. Thurman lands and right left, but Chaves continues forward. Solid left and right at the bell for Thurman. Thurman, 10-9; even 19-19.

Round 3: Trainer Dan Birmingham liked what he saw in the last round out of Thurman. Thurman boxes better early, counters well. Solid right by Thurman, then a left by Chaves. They trade lefts. Thurman lands another left and then a jab. Solid left uppercut from Chaves, followed by a Thurman jab. Chaves flurrries on the ropes to the body. Thurman escapes the ropes. Right to the body and right-left by Thurman. Counter-left by Chaves. Double-jab by Thurman. Good action. Thurman, 10-9; Thurman, 29-28

Round 4: Solid right by Thurman, and then, a right-left-right and a left hook that stun Chaves. Anothe solid left hook by Thurman. Good early start. They trade lefts. Thurman’s back to jabbing after takes a counter-right by Chaves. Good right uppercut by Thurman. Right hand to the head by Thurman. Right by Thurman, then a left. Double-right hand to the head from Thurman to close the round. Thurman, 10-9; Thurman, 39-37.

Round 5: Thurman’s jabbing early. Good short jab by Chaves. Good uppercut by Chaves. Double-jab by Chaves troubles Thurman. A lull in the action. Right to the body by Thurman. Hook by Chaves. Right to the body by Thurman. Double-jab by Chaves. Right by Thurman, then, a double-jab by Thurman. Thurman, 10-9; Thurman, 49-46.

Round 6: Thurman starts out jabbing, but gets tagged by a right to the head and then another to the body. Big right by Thurman. Thurman fires four decent jabs. Fighters trading jabs at ring-center. Sticking and moving by Thurman. Right to the body by Thurman, followed, shortly thereafter, by a good left uppercut. Thurman continues to stay at a distance. There is blood leaking from Chaves’ nose. Hard left hook at the bell by Thurman. Thurman, 10-9; Thurman, 59-55.

Round 7: Clearly the slower pace favors Thurman, who lands a double-jab and continues to box. Hard left counter hook by Thurman mutes Chaves’ body attack. Double-jab by Thurman. Left hook by Thurman. Chaves misses several punches, then, takes a three-punch combo that ends with Thurman’s left hook. Chaves lands twice to the body, but takes a right hand. Chaves lands a left, a jab and a right, but Thurman cracks in a left at the bell. Thurman, 10-9; Thurman, 69-64

Round 8: Chaves is told to be busier inside by his trainer, and lands to the body from underneath Thurman’s jab. Thurman’s still boxing well, moving in and out behind the jab. Thurman begins to back up Chaves, and lands a solid right-left combo. Solid lefts traded by the fighters, although Chaves’ is harder. Solid left by Thurman. Right to the head, then a left to the body by Chaves. Lead left lands for Thurman, as does, a hard right uppercut from Chaves. Chaves, 10-9; Thurman, 78-74.

Round 9: Both fighters have bloody noses. Left to the head early by Thurman, who is content to jab and move at times while Chaves stalks. Two lefts by Chaves, then a left by Thurman. Two jabs land for Thurman, followed by a solid left to the body which DROPS CHAVES TO ONE KNEE. Chaves beats the count, but Thurman lands a right and a left followed by a jab. They clinch. Thurman’s looking for the big, desperation punch. Lead left by Thurman. Thurman, 10-8; Thurman, 88-82.

Round 10: Thurman’s on the attack, nearly drops Chaves with a left hand, and then, CHAVES GOES DOWN FOR GOOD FROM A SERIES OF BLOWS, STARTING WITH A LEFT HOOK AND ENDINIG WITH A RIGHT TO THE HEAD ALONG THE ROPES. HE’S NOT GETTING UP. REFEREE LUIS PABON WAVES AN END TO THE FIGHT.
