Unbeaten junior welterweight prospect Frankie Gomez will take on his craftiest opponent to date on July 6 when he meets well-traveled former WBO 140-pound beltholder DeMarcus Corley in California, a bout that will be televised on Fox Sports Net, according to Golden Boy matchmaker Eric Gomez.

Corley already has signed, said Gomez, but the 21-year-old former amateur standout from East L.A. has not, though the young boxer-puncher’s signature is simply a formality.

In his last fight, and his first 10-rounder, Gomez (15-0, 11 knockouts) scored a unanimous decision over tough Lanard Lane (13-3, 8 KOs) in February.

A former U.S. amateur champion, Gomez has gone eight rounds once for a majority decision, and six rounds twice for unanimous decisions.

A veteran southpaw who turns 39 in June, Corley (39-20-1, 23 KOs) won the vacant WBO 140-pound title with a first-round stoppage of Felix Flores in June of 2001. Corley twice defended his crown by dropping ex-beltholder Ener Julio twice on the way to a unanimous decision in January of 2002 and outboxing ex-titleholder Randall Bailey to a unanimous decision in January of 2003.

His losses are to past and current beltholders Bailey, Zab Judah, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Junior Witter and Devon Alexander all by decision, as well as Miguel Cotto by fifth-round knockout.

Corley has also been stopped by Lucas Matthysse in the eighth-round, and lost decisions to Marcos Maidana, Thomas Dulorme, and Ruslan Provodnikov.

Corley unanimously decisioned previously unbeaten Gabriel Bracero last January, and in May of last year, he knocked out Paul McCloskey in the 10th round. Corley is coming off a unanimous decision loss to unbeaten Victor Postol (22-0, 10 KOs) last October.
