Apart from suffering a 10th-round knockdown, Guillermo Rigondeaux easily outboxed Nonito Donaire over 12 rounds to add THE RING and WBO 122-pound titles to his WBA belt on Saturday in New York City.

Rigondeaux (12-0, 8 knockouts), who won a unanimous decision by scores of 114-113, 115-112 and 116-111, controlled the HBO-televsied bout with accurate and powerful counterpunching and excellent footwork. Donaire (31-2, 20 KOs) stalked flat-footed for the first half of the bout, seemingly looking for one punch to change or end the fight. That punch didn’t land until the 10th, when a left floored Rigondeaux, but the Cuban southpaw got up with a clear head and quickly resumed control of the fight.

In the 12th round, Rigondeaux nailed Donaire with a left to the right eye that had the Filipino star covering his eye with his glove for the rest of the round.

“I made him look bad,” Rigondeaux told Max Kellerman after the fight, “by boxing, moving. He was looking for one shot. One shot isn’t enough to win a fight.”

Donaire offered some excuses, stating that he had a shoulder operation three months ago, but for the most part he accepted that he lost to the better man.

“I got carried away,” he said. “I wanted to take him out. It was my mistake for not changing up.”
