Congratulations to Bernard Fernandez and Norm Frauenheim for placing in the Boxing Writers Assoc. of America’s 2012 “Bernie” awards with articles written for THE RING magazine. THE RING and RingTV.com also grabbed nine honorable mentions in the annual writing contest.

Fernandez, the former president of the BWAA who the awards are named after, won second place in the News Story category for “Longest Journey: Orlando Cruz Acknowledges Publicly He’s Gay,” which appeared in the January 2013 issue of the magazine (which was on newsstands in November of 2012).

Frauenheim won third place in the Investigative Reporting category for “Worst Experience of My Life,” (a feature on Roy Jones Jr.’s controversial loss in the 156-pound gold-medal match of the 1988 Olympics) which appeared in the August 2012 issue.

RingTV.com and THE RING writers who earned Honorable Mentions include the magazine editor Michael Rosenthal (for Short Feature), Fernandez (for Investigative Reporting), Joseph Santoliquito (for Event Coverage and Long Feature), Bart Barry (for Long Feature), Lee Groves (for News Story, Short Feature and Investigative Reporting) and Mike Coppinger (for Short Feature).

The Bernies awards will be presented along with annual awards given to boxers and other sport participants at the BWAA’s annual awards banquet, to be held Thursday, April 11, at Capitale in New York City. More information is available at bwaa.org.

The contest is judged by an independent panel of journalists, composed differently every year, who read and score submitted stories without knowing who wrote them.
