Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will not be fighting Austin Trout on the Floyd Mayweather-Robert Guerrero May 4 pay-per-view card, but the two unbeaten 154-pound beltholders will face each other on April 20 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, according to Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya and CEO Richard Schaefer.

Alvarez’s showdown with Trout was supposed to be the co-featured bout to Mayweather’s anticipated Showtime Pay Per View debut versus Guerrero, which will take place at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, but the young Mexican star wanted the American pound-for-pound king to contractually agree to face him in September before the May 4 card. When that guarantee did not come, Alvarez withdrew from Las Vegas card, preferring to headline his own show.

“Canelo’s team called me and said he wanted out of the card on May 4,” De La Hoya told RingTV.com. “That’s what’s been going on for the last few days. Finally, they pulled the trigger. They wanted a new date. They wanted the Alamodome in San Antonio on April 20. They’re ready to go. That’s what Canelo wants. Canelo wants Trout.”

Showtime, which televised Alvarez’s highly rated stoppage of Josesito Lopez last September and Trout’s decision victory over Miguel Cotto last December, will broadcast the fight.

“They’re coming into the office on Friday,” De La Hoya said of Alvarez and his co-manager Chepo Reynoso. “That’s when we hope the deal will get signed, sealed an delivered.”
