Super middleweight contender Adonis Stevenson stopped gutsy fellow puncher Donovan George in the 12th-round of a one-sided but hard-fought IBF title elimination bout at the Centre Bell in Montreal on Saturday.

The 35-year-old southpaw puncher dropped George twice near the end of the fifth round with a left to the body and a compact left uppercut, but the 27-year-old Chicago native got up and kept firing back until he buzzed Stevenson (19-1, 16 knockouts) into the ropes just before the bell.

George (23-3-1, 20 KOs) was dropped a third time in a punishing Round 6 and twice in the opening minute of the 12th round. Referee Marlon Wright waved the fight off 55 seconds into the final round.

With the victory, Stevenson has put himself in the mandatory position to challenge IBF titleholder Carl Froch. While the Haiti-born Quebec resident isn’t in Froch’s class, he showed potential to be a top super middleweight against George. Stevenson did not simply beat George into submission, he outworked, outmaneuvered and generally outboxed the incredibly brave American, who had his moments in the early rounds of the bout.
