Cano, Thompson, Wilder top May 26 card
Once-beaten lightweight Pablo Cesar Cano of Mexico City will be after his second straight knockout when he meets hard-hitting Colombia native Fidel Monterrosa on a card promoted by Golden Boy, to be televised on Fox Deportes on May 26 from Cancun, Mexico.
Cano (23-1-1, 18 knockouts) is coming off a sixth-round stoppage of Francisco Contreras, whose record fell to 16-2 (13 KOs) after the loss.
The win over Contreras helped Cano, 22, to rebound from September’s 10th-round knockout loss to Erik Morales in a failed bid to earn the WBC’s junior welterweight belt.
Monterossa (29-5, 23 KOs), who is 23, will be looking to improve his current streak of two wins by KO.
The co-main event boasts hard-hittinng lightweight Sergio Thompson (22-2, 20 KOs) of Chetumal, Mexico, who is coming off a second-round knockout upset over Venezuelan-born ex-titleholder Jorge Linares (31-3, 20 KOs) in March.
Thompson, 27, will face Argentina’s Juan Roman Solis (16-5-1, 5 KOs).
Also on the card is heavyweight knockout artist Deontay Wilder (21-0, 21 KOs), a 26-year-old former Olympic bronze medalist from Tuscaloosa, Al., against an opponent to be determined. Wilder is coming off February’s fourth-round knockout of Marlon Hayes.
In separate junior lightweight bouts, Robert Manzanarez (17-0, 13 KOs) will meet Juan Jiminez (7-2, 6 KOs), and Francisco Vargas (10-0-1, 8 KOs) faces Edgar Ramirez (9-5, 7 KOs).
Lightweight Jamie Kavanagh (9-0-1, 4 KOs) will face an opponent to be determined, flyweight Arely Valente (8-0, 4 KOs) fights Abigail Ramos (3-2, 2 KOs), and welterweight Jose Aguilar will pursue his fourth knockout in as many wins without a loss against an opponent to be named.
