Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s decision to fight Miguel Cotto on May 5 was in line with the fans’ wishes, according to a RingTV.com poll.

Readers turned out in force to voice their opinions, with over 33,000 participating in a poll that posed the question: If not Manny Pacquiao, who should Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight next?

Close to half (45.6 percent) of them chose WBA junior middleweight titleholder Miguel Cotto, followed by WBC junior middleweight beltholder Saul “Canelo” Alvarez at 30.6 percent, and former junior welterweight titleholder Amir Khan at 13.4 percent. Three other choices — Robert Guerrero, Erik Morales and Paulie Malignaggi — received less than 4 percent each.

Mayweather went the direction that many had hoped, announcing on Wednesday that his opponent would be Cotto, which will give him a shot at earning an eighth world title over five weight divisions.

His other titles: WBC junior lightweight (against Genaro Hernandez in 1998), WBC lightweight (Jose Luis Castillo, 2002), WBC junior welterweight (Arturo Gatti, 2005), IBF welterweight (Zab Judah, 2006), WBC welterweight (Carlos Baldomir, 2006), WBC junior middleweight (Oscar De La Hoya, 2007). He is the current WBC welterweight titleholder, having taken it from Victor Ortiz last year.

Cotto has won titles in three divisions: WBO junior welterweight (Kelson Pinto, 2004), WBA welterweight (Carlos Quintana, 2006, and WBA junior middleweight (Yuri Foreman, 2010).
