Viacheslav Senchenko of Ukraine stopped Marco Avendano in the sixth round – his first KO since 2008 — to retain his WBA welterweight title Friday in Donetsk, Ukraine.

It was Senchenko’s third successful defense of the title he won by outpointing Yuri Nuzhnenko in April 2009.

Senchenko (32-0, 21 knockouts) hasn’t lost a fight since he was eliminated in the round of 16 in the 2000 Olympics.

All but three of his pro fights have taken place in his native country and he has never fought outside Europe.

Avendano (30-8-1, 22 KOs) is 4-3 in his last seven fights, losing two decisions to Nobuhiro Ishida and then to Senchenk. He had won three in a row going into Saturday.

Avendano is from Venezuela.
