Junior welterweight prospect Jessie Vargas returns to Fight Night Club against Lanard Lane on the Feb. 24 season premiere of the monthly club show series from downtown Los Angeles, Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Robert Diaz informed RingTV.com.

The eight-round main event should prove to be challenge for the Fight Night Club regular.

Vargas (13-0, 7 knockouts), an aggressive boxer-puncher trained by Roger Mayweather, fought on three FNC cards last year, including stoppages of fringe contender Ernesto Zavala (TKO 6) and seasoned veteran Pablo Sarmiento (TKO 1) in televised main events.

However, while the 21-year-old Las Vegas resident knocked out his more experienced foes in impressive fashion, the advanced age and inactivity of his opponents had to be taken into consideration.

Sarmiento, 39, ended a six-year “retirement” when he faced Vargas on short notice last September. Zavala, 38, was one bout removed from a near 5-year hiatus from the sport.

In Lane (12-1, 7 KOs), a 28-year-old sharp-shooter from Philadelphia, Vargas faces an active young up-and-comer much like himself. Lane, who turned heads with a second-round TKO of fellow prospect Said El Harrak (8-0) in December of 2009, is also motivated to get his career back on track after suffering his first loss, an eight-round decision to unbeaten prospect Mike Dallas last July.

It will be interesting to see how Vargas handles Lane’s considerable hand speed, athleticism and sound fundamentals.

Former amateur standout Jamie Kavanagh (4-0, 2 KOs) will fight in the six-round co-feature, according to Diaz. An opponent for the 20-year-old junior welterweight from Ireland will be announced soon.

Fight Night Club is streamed live on RingTV.com and Ustream.com from Club Nokia. The Thursday night series is also televised (tape delay) on Fox Sports Net and its affiliates.
