THE RING GOES DIGITAL! A WORD FROM THE EDITOR

So many superb print publications have become extinct. Wikipedia has to update its list of “demised magazines” every couple of months. It’s not just American icons, such as Life, McCall and Gourmet that have vanished. The rot has reached all the way to the fringe, were Cracked (Mad’s only worthy competitor in the 1950s and early ’60s), National Lampoon, and Vibe have also gone out of business.

THE RING, however – a specialty magazine throughout its existence – is still here, still alive, a truth that is self-evident by the fact you are reading these words.

It’s rather amazing when you think about it: A print publication, founded in 1922, still publishing every month. I believe there are many reasons why THE RING has survived, so many, in fact, that to discuss them here would be impractical. We’ll leave that story for another time.

What is of immediate importance is that there are exciting changes afoot for THE RING and its loyal readers, changes that will give the publication a fresh look and a state-of-the-art method of delivering its unparalleled content.

The February 2011 issue, which goes on sale the last week of December 2010, will have undergone a redesign, featuring bold new graphics and several innovative, interactive departments that will give readers greater involvement in the magazine, and some refreshing visual appeal provided by the new Ring Card Girl of the month.

Even more significant, however, is the launch of an online Digital Edition of THE RING, also known as a virtual magazine.

The contents of the Digital Edition will be exactly the same as those contained within the paper edition, but readers will also be able to access it on their computer, iPad, iPhone, Droid or virtually any other device with a Web browser via RingTV.com or a link emailed to subscribers every month.

The digital edition of the February issue will be provided free of charge and will remain on our Web site (www.ringtv.com) so that potential subscribers will be able experience technology before committing to a purchase.

Starting with the March 2010 issue, all subscribers to the traditional paper magazine will also receive the digital edition as a free premium along with the paper edition. There will also be the option of subscribing to just the on-line version at a price that is nearly 50 percent less than the 1-year U.S. print subscription price and nearly 80 percent less than the international subscription price.

One of the problems that has haunted all monthly magazine since the very first one rolled off the press is what is known as the “lag time,” which is the number of days between an event and the magazine arriving in your mailbox or local retail outlet. The online edition of THE RING will enable readers to get the latest issue up to weeks sooner than ever before in the history of the publication.
THE RING has been through many changes over the decades, but we’re not just giving the venerable publication a new paint job. This time we’re embracing the challenging world of the new media by combing the best of boxing journalism with ever-evolving marvels of the digital word. RingTV.com was the first step in that direction, having both a paper and online version of the magazine is the next.

But rest assured, THE RING’s commitment to provide insightful, comprehensive and unbiased coverage of boxing, which has made it the leader in its field since its inception, will remain unchanged.
Fights and fighters is what THE RING is about – always has been, always will be.

The only difference is that the digital edition will bring the contents to life online in a groundbreaking new format. Stay tuned for more details in the February issue.
