LAS VEGAS — Victor Ortiz and Lamont Peterson fought to a majority draw in a 10-round junior welterweight bout on the Amir Khan-Marcos Maidana undercard Saturday at Mandalay Bay.

Ortiz (28-3-1, 22 knockouts) was the aggressor throughout but had difficulty landing clean punches against a very good defensive fighter.

The Oxnard, Calif., had his best moment in the third round, when he dropped Peterson twice, once with a left-left-right combination and again as a result of a flurry that sent him flying against the ropes.

The 10-7 round salvaged the draw for Ortiz.

Peterson (28-2, 14 KOs) dominated the second half of the fight, in which he was more aggressive and used his quick hands to land hard, accurate punches.

The Washington, D.C., fighter might've stopped Ortiz if he had more power or Ortiz had a weak chin, neither of which is the case.

Judge Robert Hoyle scored it 95-93 for Peterson, meaning he had Peterson winning eight of the 12 rounds. The other two judges scored it 94-94, or six rounds for Peterson.

RingTV.com scored it 95-93 for Ortiz, or six rounds to six.

“I fell like crap,” Ortiz said. “I thought I pulled it off. He didn't even hit that hard.”

In other undercard fights, Joan Guzman (31-0-1, 17 KOs) of the Dominican Republic stopped Jason Davis (11-8-1, 3 KOs) of Vancouver in the fifth round of a scheduled 10-round junior welterweight matchup between overweight fighters. Guzman weighed in at 144¾ pounds, Davis 143.

Heavyweight Seth Mitchell (20-0-1, 14 KOs), a former college football player, stopped Taurus Sykes (11-8-1, 3 KOs) of Brooklyn, N.Y., in the fifth round of a scheduled eight-round bout.

Sharif Bogere (18-0, 11 KOs) of Henderson, Nev., easily outpointed Chris Fernandez (19-11-1, 11 KOs) of Salt Lake City in an eight-round lightweight matchup.

Junior welterweight prospect Jessie Vargas (13-0, 7 KOs) of Las Vegas defeated Ramon Montano (17-9-2, 2 KOs) of Las Vegas by a one-sided unanimous decision in an eight-round bout. Vargas is trained by Roger Mayweather.

And Jamie Kavanagh (4-0, 2 KOs) of Ireland stopped Jacob Thornton (2-2) of St. Louis with a body shot 44 seconds into a scheduled four-round junior welterweight bout. Kavanagh trains with Freddie Roach in Hollywood, Calif.
