Who would be next for Khan?

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – Amir Khan probably will fight a lot closer to home in his next fight if he beats Marcos Maidana on Dec. 11 in Las Vegas.

Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions, which handles Khan, said the native of Bolton, England will fight in the UK again to help build his growing fan base there. He last fought there in December of last year, when he stopped Dmitry Salita in one round in Newcastle.

“He’ll definitely fight in the UK his next fight,” Schaefer said. “I think that’s important for him. HBO is interested in televising a Khan fight from the UK. We just need to come up with the right opponent.”

Schaefer mentioned several names.

Unbeaten junior welterweight Joan Guzman of the Dominican Republic, who fights on the Dec. 11 card, is one possibility. Another is Michael Katsidis, who was stopped by Juan Manuel Marquez on Saturday. He’d have to move up in weight. And Breidis Prescott, who stopped Khan in one round two years ago, is always a candidate.

The most-logical choice might be unbeaten lightweight John Murray of Manchester, England if THE RING’s No. 6-rated 135-pounder is willing to move up a division for what would be a big fight in the UK.

“I think that fight would fill up the M.E.N. Arena in Manchester. That’s the kind of fight we’re looking for,” Schaefer said.

Schaefer has one other opponent in mind, although this fight might not take place for a while.

“I can definitely see down the road ÔǪ and I don’t know how far down the road ÔǪ maybe not that far ÔǪ a fight between Amir and Floyd Mayweather Jr.,” he said. “That, in my opinion, would be a fascinating and exciting matchup as well.”
