Schaefer disappointed in Mosley

LOS ANGELES – Richard Schaefer said Monday he is disappointed that Shane Mosley has distanced himself from Golden Boy Promotions to pursue a fight against Manny Pacquiao.

Mosley, who apparently is still a partner in Oscar De La Hoya’s company, reportedly said he hasn't been under contract with Golden Boy for two years. He told reporters at the Manny Pacquiao-Antonio Margarito post-fight news conference that he won’t sign with Top Rank, as has been rumored, but must go it alone if he hopes to fight Pacquiao.

“There are fighters at Top Rank that I want to fight,” Mosley told boxingscene.com, “and I have to go (this) route to fight them. If Golden Boy can’t make the fights, then I have to step outside the box as my own promoter and do it.”

Schaefer objected to the fact Mosley would publicly discuss his contract – or lack thereof — with Golden Boy and refused to do so himself.

He also took exception to the fact that Mosley said “my best fights have been with Bob (Arum).” Mosley apparently meant that he faced several of Arum’s fighters, including De La Hoya, on Top Rank cards.

“One thing I’m not going to do is discuss, unlike Shane, his contractual situation with Golden Boy,” Schaefer said. “That’s not to be discussed with the media. That’s between Shane and his team and us. I left Shane a message and he hasn’t called me back. We’ll see what’s going to happen. It’s rather disappointing for me. I think we’ve done a terrific job with Shane. We made him a lot of money.

“He was fighting on ESPN when he joined us. In four years or so, we made him tens of millions of dollars. That’s why I’m rather disappointed to read the things I’ve read. He said all of his big fights supposedly were with Arum anyway? I don’t really know where that came from.”

Mosley fought the likes of Fernando Vargas, Miguel Cotto, Ricardo Mayorga, Margarito and Floyd Mayweather Jr. as a Golden Boy fighter.
