The decisive winners of the major bouts from this past Saturday all earned RING rankings or advanced in the magazine’s divisional ratings.

Featherweight titleholder Juan Manuel Lopez probably scored the biggest victory of the weekend, when he stopped former 122-pound champ Rafael Marquez after eight rounds of a thrilling shootout.

The TKO win, his 30th consecutive victory against no losses, advanced the hard-punching Puerto Rican southpaw to the No. 1 spot in THE RING’s featherweight rankings, replacing longtime beltholder Chris John.

Robert Guerrero, a former featherweight and junior lightweight titleholder, scored the most significant lightweight victory of his career by out-pointing Vicente Escobedo over 10 rounds. The win earned Guerrero a No. 10 ranking in THE RING’s lightweight ratings.

However, the weekend’s most impressive performance may have belonged to Glen Johnson, who knocked out Allan Green in the eighth round of a bout that was part of the Super Six World Boxing Classic on the Lopez-Marquez undercard.

Green isn’t considered a more formidable opponent than Marquez or even Escobedo, but given Johnson’s advanced age (41) and the fact that he was fighting at his lightest weight (168 pounds) in 10 years, the former light heavyweight champ’s relentless effort was something special.

It was special enough to merit a No. 10 ranking in THE RING’s super middleweight ratings in the eyes of the magazine’s Editorial Board.

Johnson (51-14-2, 35 knockouts) is currently THE RING’s No. 3-ranked light heavyweight, which makes him one of two active fighters the magazine ranks in two divisions along with Timothy Bradley (who is rated at junior welterweight and welterweight).

“Now that Glen Johnson has become a significant part of Showtime’s ‘Super Six’ super middleweight tournament, THE RING feels that Johnson deserves to be rated at both light heavyweight and super middleweight,” said Nigel Collins, Editor-in-Chief of THE RING magazine. “It should also not be forgotten that although Andre Ward had already beaten Green by decision in a Super Six bout, Johnson became the first to stop Green in a professional bout.”

Fans will watch the Super Six semifinals, which Johnson qualified for with the Green victory, with much anticipation to see how the seasoned veteran fares against the likes of Andre Ward, Arthur Abraham and Carl Froch.

Who knows? Johnson might have a few more special performances in him.

RING RATINGS UPDATE

SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHTS:

Due to his impressive knockout of Allan Green, Glen Johnson replaces Brian Magee at No. 10.

LIGHTWEIGHTS:

The entrance of Robert Guerrero at No. 10, following his victory over Vincente Escobedo, creates a minor shakeup at the bottom of the 135-pound division. After reviewing the records of Anthony Peterson (No. 8 last week), Urbano Antillon (No. 9 last week), and Miguel Vazquez (No. 10 last week), it was decided that Peterson would exit, which pushes up Antillion and Vazquez to No. 8 and No. 9, respectively.

FEATHERWEIGHTS:

Juan Manuel Lopez’s TKO victory over Rafael Marquez elevates Lopez from No. 2 to No. 1, while Marquez retains his No. 9 spot. Also advancing is Yuriorkis Gamboa, who moves from No. 3 to No. 2. Chris John (No. 1 last week) drops to No. 3.

“John’s demotion was based on inactivity and the fact that his scheduled comeback opponent, Fernando David Saucedo, has built his record against extremely modest opposition and has not had a bout scheduled for more than eight rounds since 2007,” said Collins.

JUNIOR FEATHERWEIGHTS:

Satoshi Honsono (No. 8 last week) departs to campaign as a featherweight. The new alignment has Takalani Ndlouvu at No. 6 due to his win over Jeff Mathebula, who slips to No. 7. The shakeup also pushes down Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (No. 7 last week) to No. 8.

JUNIOR FLYWEIGHTS:

Gilberto Keb Baas’ decision over Omar Nino (No. 2 last week) enters at No. 2. This results in all other 108-pounders rated last week also falling one spot and pushed out Roman Gonzalez.

STRWAWEIGHTS:

Kwanthai Sithmorseng’s points win over Pigmy Kotietgym, allows Sithmorseng to replace Wanheng Menayothin at No. 10.
