Escobedo off Telefutura card because of illness
Vicente Escobedo has pulled out of his fight against Raymundo Beltran on Friday in Denver because he is ill, according to the Woodland (Calif.) Daily Democrat. Escobedo is from Woodland.
Former Cuban Olympian Erislandy Lara will face William Correa in the main event on Telefutura.
Escobedo, a former U.S. Olympian, told the newspaper that a viral infection has left him at less than full strength.
“I won't be able to go in 100 percent,” he told the paper. “I want to give 100 percent and win. I don't wanna take a chance.”
Escobedo (22-2, 14 knockouts) bounced back from his split-decision loss to Michael Katsidis in Septemeber – his first title shot – by stopping veteran Carlos Urias in March.
Lara (11-0, 6 KOs) has gone largely unchallenged in his short career because of his exceptional skills. Correa (8-3, 3 KOs) is from Puerto Rico.
