Fernando Montiel stunned bantamweight titleholder Hozumi Hasegawa, stopping the popular Japanese fighter with only one second remaining in the fourth round Thursday in Tokyo.

The Mexican hurt Hasegawa in the final seconds of the round, knocking his head back with one vicious uppercut, and was pounding him on the ropes when the referee stepped in and stopped it a split second before the bell sounded to end the round.

Hasegawa (28-3, 12 knockouts) was leading by two points on one card and one point on two cards when it was stopped. He was making the 11th defense of his belt.

Montiel (41-2-2, 31 KOs) has now won five major titles in three weight classes. His corner went wild when the fight was stopped, one member hoisting Montiel onto his shoulders.
